Ecuador : ECUADOR and EU to hold first round of negotiations of the Multipart Trade Agreement

Publish Date : 07-Jan-2014

In Brussels, from January 13 to 17, Ecuador and the European Union (EU) will hold the first round of negotiations of the Multipart Trade Agreement, said the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Trade and added that both the parties are expected to address the market access of agricultural and industrial products, trade in services and facilities, and geographical indications.

According to the ministry, since 2009, the negotiation process was halted because of withdrawal of Ecuador from the talks. The process was reactivated following instructions by President Rafael Correa, who has warned that singing of the eventual agreement will only be done if it proves to be of benefit to the Andean country.

Correa further added that what is being negotiated with the European bloc is a trade agreement, not a free trade agreement. The government will never pass the red lines it settled, as a bad negotiation could bankrupt the country, he added.

The negotiations would commence during next week and in case it becomes successful, signing of the agreement could take place during the first quarter of this year.
