Surrey headquartered Wates Construction, has received a L133 million contract to carry out public sector work across the East Midlands, including developments for Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils. The firm will perform as the sole contractor on the Scape-run East Midlands Property Alliance (Empa) regional framework for the next four years.
Wates will cover small to medium-sized projects between L500,000 and L7.5 million for customers all over the East Midlands.
A local authority-controlled firm, Scape, is wholly owned by Derby City, Derbyshire County, Gateshead, Nottingham City, Nottinghamshire County and Warwickshire County Councils in equal shares, to make savings for its public sector customers.
Phil Harrison, managing director, Wates Construction Midlands and North, commented, "I am delighted with the announcement that Wates has been named as the contracting partner for the Empa provincial framework, a procurement route that provides cost and time efficiencies in the delivery of public sector construction works."
Harrison added, "Since our appointment to the Empa Intermediate framework in 2009, we have delivered a range of works across the region and we have worked in partnership with Scape to ensure this work has brought with it a boost to the regional economy through local subcontractor engagement."
"We look forward to continuing our relationship with Scape to provide clients with true value for money."
Local authorities in the East Midlands established Empa to boost the procurement and availability of construction projects and property maintenance for local authorities, saving time and money for them and their council taxpayers.
Representing empa and its members, Scape operates regional frameworks all over the wider East Midlands. The total value of framework of Scape amounts to nearly L2.5 billion.
Alan Coole, Empa's head, said, "The work of Empa, and managing agent Scape, gives our public sector clients peace of mind. By having our contractors already in place our clients do not need to undertake procurement exercises themselves – saving them time and money."
"By and large, Nottingham City Council uses the Empa framework to deliver its capital projects. The budget is currently being put together. We work with the city council to find the right partner to deliver all of their projects."
Youngsters would get the opportunities through the Empa training academy, which is funded by the contractors and Scape, and is co-ordinated by Nottingham-based employment and skills company Futures.
