Australia : BGC wins $100 million iron ore contract
Publish Date : 17-Jan-2014
Mining and civil contracting firm BGC has been awarded a $100 million contract to resume operations at Arrium Mining's South Australian Iron Knob mine.
The four year contract to begin operations at the Whyalla site will include the development of two new pits, Princess West and Princess East, as well as the reopening the Monarch pit.
The company said it will also finish initial cutbacks at each of the pits.
Arrium Mining undertook recently the first blast in the area in over 15 years.
Arrium and BGC have worked together for more than a year at the miner's South Middleback operations where the contractor gave mining plant and maintenance services, ore excavation and haulage.
Greg Heylen, BGC Contracting's chief executive said the Iron Knob contract represents a significant addition to the company's existing contract with Arrium,
Heylen said, "We are delighted to have earned Arrium's continued confidence on the back of our work at South Middleback and look forward to playing a part in returning the iconic Iron Knob project to production."
Iron Knob was first mined in the late 1800s and is accepted as the birthplace of iron ore mining in Australia.
Stage one will see a single digger running for seven months after which a second dig fleet will be presented as the project ramps up to its target yearly production of 8 million bank cubic metres.
