Khartoum Airport aims at becoming a major hub for Africa by signing of a major development contract with a Chinese contractor.
The contract signed during the Bahrain Airshow was for phase two of the $1.38 billion project for development of a new airport named Khatoum New International Airport (KNIA), located nearly 45km outside the Sudanese capital. The new airport a 102square km site will be in place of the existing two million passenger capacity airport with a 4.5 million capacity terminal and a 4,000 metre runway.
Construction is scheduled to commence in May and would be completed in July 2015, with China Harbour Engineering acting as the main contractor.
The contract for phase two of the project which is designed to boost the capacity was signed by project engineering director, Fatima Abdullatif, and Zhang Wenfeng from China Harbour Engineering.
Consultant Mohamed Hassan Elmugamer, said, "Khartoum is the centre of Africa. It used to be a main transit point but we lost the opportunity. Now is the chance to get back. The roads and highways are already in place."
The Chinese national bank will be financing the $700million first phase of the project through a loan to the Sudan government.
Abdullatif said, "There are lot of opportunities. We want the private sector to get involved in the project in areas such as cargo and MRO. Now is the time to be talking."
