In the Middle East and Africa, they face major challenges in connection with waste management. In The United Arab Emirates, dumping sites take up 1,800 ha of land and the waste volumes are increasing markedly. Photo: Center of Waste Management, Abu Dhabi.

Together with His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, and Rasmus Helveg, Denmark's Minister for Development Cooperation, Thomas Dalsgaard, Executive Vice President in Thermal Power, has left the country for Abu Dhabi in order to enter into a new cooperation. On behalf of Denmark, the Crown Prince and the Minister enter into an agreement with the United Arab Emirates, and on behalf of DONG Energy, Thomas Dalsgaard signs a cooperation agreement with the investment company Masdar.

"We see some interesting perspectives in the MEA region which faces great challenges when it comes to handling increasing waste volumes, so we're pleased that Masdar wants to cooperate with us to examine the business potentials in the area," said Thomas Dalsgaard.

Resources in waste
To begin with, the cooperation agreement comprises REnescience, and under this agreement, DONG Energy and Masdar are to study the market and the possibilities of using the REnescience technology for waste management and recycling in the Middle East and Africa.

"We expect that REnescience can supply solutions contributing to utilisation of the resources contained in the waste of the region. If the preliminary analyses look promising, and we can agree to proceed with a full-scale plant, we expect that this could result in orders which would also benefit our Danish and foreign subcontractors," said Thomas Dalsgaard.

Partnership
The cooperation between DONG Energy and Masdar will be a partnership where New Bio Solutions' knowledge and know-how within biobased waste management are combined with Masdar's extensive commercial activities and network in the MEA region.

The agreement consists of two phases: In the first phase, the technology must be adapted for the local and regional conditions and a decision must be made on the establishment of a demonstration plant. In the second phase, the parties must establish a commercial platform to propagate the REnescience technology in the MEA region.

The parties expect to complete the first phase within 12 to 18 months.
