India,South Africa : INDIA: PUNJAB secures coal from SOUTH AFRICA to run its thermal power facilities

Publish Date : 30-Jan-2014

The coal-starved thermal power stations of the Indian state of Punjab are expected to get a breather following South Africa's decision to supply coal to fulfill the demands.

The development has taken place during a meeting between France K. Morule, South African High Commissioner to India, and the Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal. They have met here on Monday and during this meeting, Morule has expressed their willingness to deliver coal for the thermal power facilities of the state.

The South African envoy has revealed before the media that they have surplus coal reserves and thus setting up of a regular coal link with Punjab is possible. Morule added, "We are a mineral rich country and would certainly like to have an agreement with Punjab on this, to which the chief minister has readily agreed."

He has revealed that he has held meeting with the state CM along with entrepreneur Vikramjit Singh Sahney, the President of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Honorary Consul of South Africa for Northern India.

Morule has further said that establishment of a coal supply linkage between South Africa and Punjab is feasible. He added, "We are here to promote trade investments, tourism and cultural exchange with Punjab as we have historical bonds between the two countries."

He has also disclosed in the meeting here on Monday that partnerships for two food processing plants in Punjab have been approved.

Morule said, "Talks were also held to facilitate zero customs duty between the two countries, which would further help in encouraging more tie-ups with Punjab. There is room for educational tie-ups as well between South Africa and Punjab."

The High Commissioner further said that exporting wine to the state can also be looked at.

On his part, Sahney has stated that South Africa will also tie-up with the Punjab-based businesses for infrastructure development ventures.
