Bombardier has received a contract from Belgian light rail operator De Lijn.

The contract worth around €6m is to take up heavy overhauls on 20 metre-gauge trams, used on the 68km coastal tramway between Knokke and De Panne.

According to Bombardier, the vehicles are nearly three decades old and structural revisions is expected to extend their life by 10 years.

Originally, the trams were delivered as two-section vehicles, which were later extended with a low-floor central section between 2001 and 2003.

The first refurbished vehicle is expected to enter into service in January 2015.
