Publish Date : 28-May-2014

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering cooperation through a set of mutually agreed activities was signed this morning between the National Library of Mauritius and the National Library of China at Fon Sing Building in Port Louis.

The function was graced by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mookhesswur Choonee, and the Assistant Director of the National Library of China and Director of the National Library of China-New Technology Research Centre, Mr Sun Yigang, amongst others.

The MOU makes provision for the acquisition of each other's portion of catalogues, experts to establish conservation exchange programmes, and methodological approach for the digitisation of selected library materials deemed mutually beneficial to both parties.

In his address, Minister Choonee recalled that diplomatic ties between Mauritius and the People's Republic of China exist since 1972 when the then Prime Minister and Father of the Nation, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, proceeded on a State visit there. Today, he stated, the whole world is queuing up to knock at China's door because of its massive economic and infrastructural development, he said. But is it is a matter of pride for Mauritius, that even if we are a small country, China has always helped us in different domains, he added.

Furthermore, the Minister expressed the wish for the collaboration of the National Library of China with National Archives of Mauritius with regard to the preservation of our national treasures.

Mr Yigang, for his part, pointed out that it is the first time that his institution is teaming up with the National Library. He recalled that his institution not only has the largest collection of Chinese books in the world, but also the largest collection of materials in foreign languages ??in the country.

He made a donation of 5 000 ebooks, that is, 1 000 in Chinese and 4 000 in foreign languages to the National Library of Mauritius.
