Singapore : SINGAPORE's PUB awards engineering contract for mega-sewer to a JV between Black & Veatch and Aecom

Publish Date : 07-Jun-2014

Singapore's national water agency, PUB, has announced selection of a joint venture between Black & Veatch and Aecom for provision of engineering services for a scheme featuring nearly 18 miles of tunnelling and a 7.5-mile outfall.

As per the contract, the JV team will be responsible to work with PUB to facilitate the second phase of the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS), which is to extend DTSS to the western side of Singapore through an 18.6-mile-long tunnel, nearly 44 miles of link sewers, the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) and an estimated 7.5-mile deep-sea outfall. The DTSS is expected to result in a 50% reduction in land occupied by used-water infrastructure with three centralized collection and treatment points: Changi WRP in the east; Kranji WRP in the north; and Tuas WRP in the west.

Cindy Wallis-Lage, president of Black & Veatch's water business said, "The project's vision underlines PUB's innovation and global leadership in sustainable water solutions. It is a privilege to team with Aecom and PUB in setting a new standard in reliable, flexible and energy-efficient infrastructure that promotes water sustainability for the future."

Michael Burke, Aecom president and chief executive officer, said, "We have assembled a compelling joint venture team of world-class local and global experts, who look forward to delivering a sustainable infrastructure solution. We are honoured to be a part of the DTSS project, which will enhance Singapore's water sustainability and resilience — solidifying its place as a leader in the global water industry."

A water production facility is to be integrated with the Tuas WRP. The site will also receive an integrated waste management facility.

As part of the first stage of the project, The Black & Veatch and Aecom JV will execute a feasibility study and preliminary design.
