Japan : CONNECTED car deal with Tesla secured by DoCoMo
Publish Date : 16-Jun-2014
Japanese telco turn into newest operator to offer telematics, entertainment services for electric car maker.
NTT DoCoMo has become the newest in a growing list of operators to gain a machine-to-machine (M2M) deal with electric car maker Tesla.
The Japanese operator will offer telematics, navigation, mobile communications, and in-car entertainment to drivers of Tesla's Model S saloon car when it goes on sale this summer.
DoCoMo, in a statement said, "Tesla selected DoCoMo after favourably evaluating its mobile network infrastructure's stable, extra-wide availability, including in downtown areas with skyscrapers and in mountainous regions, and extensive support for corporate customers". "DoCoMo is expanding its involvement with in-car infotainment telematics and intelligent transport systems that motoring subscribers will use for smarter, more convenient lives."
Keen to present a steady customer experience in all the markets where its cars are sold, Tesla has been busy associating with multinational operators for M2M services.
Telefonica in April gained a contract to offer connectivity to Tesla vehicles in Germany, Spain and the U.K., and in the Netherlands using KPN's network. And in November, TeliaSonera won a similar deal covering Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden.
Behind the services these telcos are offering are Jasper Wireless' Connected Car Cloud and its M2M World Alliance, which are planned to make simpler the deployment of multinational M2M services.
