Servelec Group PLC has been selected by the nuclear business of EDF Energy PLC to upgrade drive systems at 2 of EDF's UK power stations, while Servelec's subsidiary Tynemarch Systems Ltd has been commissioned by Welsh Water to provide Miser software to identify electricity and operating-cost savings.

Under the deal, which is part of Electricite de France SA, Servelec will provide an upgrade to the fuelling machine at Torness and Heysham power stations with a hoist drive system. The existing control systems date from the 1980s and are coming to the end of their operating life.

The new drive cubicles will be designed and manufactured to offer replacements to the existing units and will add enhancements to improve all aspects of control and maintainability.

Servelec will also replace an ageing stepper motor and gear-box arrangement at Torness with a modern servo drive and linear actuator. The replacement system will interact with existing controls, which will be modified to provide enhanced position monitoring.

The actuator controls the speed of the boiler feed pump and will be controlled using a Siemens S110 safety rated positioning drive.

With Welsh Water, Servelec’s Miser system will be used to provide pump schedules and monitor the performance of the Heads of the Valley area, which consists of 8 reservoirs and 5 sources.

Miser is Servelec's suite of decision-support tools for optimal water management, asset and resource planning.

Miser will take live information such as flows and reservoir levels from the Servelec SCOPE-X telemetry system to forecast demand over the following few days and then produce pump and valve control settings automatically to manage the water supply network night and day to meet customer demands, licences and other constraints at minimum cost.

The system will support Welsh Water in responding to routine maintenance and unplanned network events, to prevent or minimise any impact on customers. Tynemarch will provide support and maintenance for the system, which will be operated from the Welsh Water control room.
