Victoria and Malaysia have come together in an exciting new joint automotive industry venture that will boost Malaysia’s technical capabilities and export profile and give Victorian suppliers access to the expanding South East Asian automotive industry.
Victoria’s Minister for Manufacturing David Hodgett and Malaysia’s Minister for International Trade and Industry Dato’ Sri Mustapa bin Mohamed yesterday announced the In-Market Automotive Supply Chain Advocate Project, which will be located at the Malaysian Automotive Institute (MAI). Mr Hodgett also announced the appointment of Mr Lindsey Siede and Mr Peter Taylor from Australia’s AutoCRC Ltd as the Victorian In-Market Automotive Supply Chain Advocates in Malaysia.
“This important project is a joint Malaysia and Victorian Coalition Government initiative designed to proactively assist Victorian and Malaysian automotive supply chain businesses to identify new business opportunities,” Mr Hodgett said. “The project builds on the AutoCRC‘s strong understanding of the Malaysian automotive industry through its existing engagement with the MAI and Malaysian Original Equipment Manufacturers. “Both Mr Siede and Mr Taylor are also well known to the Victorian automotive industry through their roles in the Automotive Supplier Excellence Australia (ASEA) program.
“They will divide their time between Malaysia and Victoria in order to undertake the project, which will help the Malaysian automotive industry increase its technical capabilities and export profile.
“It will also give Victorian automotive suppliers an opportunity to access the rapidly growing Malaysian and South East Asian automotive industry, which is expected to expand dramatically from the current three million vehicles to five million vehicles in 2017.” Mr Mustapa Mohamed said Malaysia welcomed the Victorian Government’s engagement with Malaysia. “Victorian automotive suppliers are well positioned to partner with the Malaysian automotive industry given Victoria’s strong capabilities in automotive R&D, engineering and manufacturing.
“The project is timely as it coincides with the roll out of the Malaysia National Automotive Plan 2014. “Victoria already has a long standing relationship with the Malaysian automotive industry through several Victorian automotive businesses including PolyPacific, MtM, Hella and the AutoCRC and this initiative will build on these successes,” Mr Mustapa Mohammed said.
