Balfour Beatty has successfully engaged with local business on two high profile projects for Eastleigh Borough Council. Working closely with the council, Balfour Beatty placed 99% of orders with SMEs and 95% of orders, by value, with companies within 30 miles of the site. The Ł7.3 million refurbishment of Eastleigh & Wessex House involved the complete external and internal upgrade of the existing five-storey 1970s office block to transform the existing town centre offices into a modern new home for the Council, accommodating approximately 350 staff. Eastleigh Borough Council’s decision to relocate is part of a long-term vision to move to the town centre in order to better serve local residents at a more accessible site.
The renovations at Eastleigh & Wessex House have been designed to achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard for sustainability, with vastly improved insulation, the installation of solar roof panels and cladding to generate ‘green’ energy and the use of highly efficient internal lighting. Council Leader Keith House, said: “We see a real benefit in moving into Eastleigh town centre. By investing in the town, the Council is also contributing to the long term regeneration and growth of the area. Balfour Beatty has helped with that process by involving local businesses during the project.”
The Ł3.5 million Lowford Centre is a state of the art community facility incorporating the first completely new library in Hampshire for 30 years, a new office for the Parish Council and a GP surgery, plus three halls for community hire, kitchens and a coffee shop. The Mayor of Eastleigh, Councillor Tony Noyce, said: “The centre provides a hub for the village, bringing important local community services together in one location. The project is a great example of partnership, with many groups working together to deliver such a fantastic facility.”
As well as using local businesses such as Patterson Reeves & Partners, consulting civil and structural engineers, LSC Facades and Finnegan Flooring, Balfour Beatty showed its commitment to the community by employing 23 local people over the course of the projects. In addition, the Eastleigh & Wessex House project team hosted three site visits by Eastleigh College, with 33 students in total benefitting from this experience. Andy Duff, Balfour Beatty Managing Director for the south of England, said: “We are delighted to have completed these key projects for Eastleigh Borough Council, helping to provide improved services for local residents and utilising local businesses in the process to maximise benefit for the local community.”
