Publish Date : 22-Aug-2014

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, and the Junior Achievement Mascareignes (JAM) which aims to enhance the curriculum was signed this morning at the MITD House, Phoenix.

JAM is an international NGO which is present in over 120 countries. The signatory for the Ministry was the Acting Senior Chief Executive, Mr Ram Prakash Ramlugun, and for the JAM, the Executive Director, Mrs Michelle Lionnet. In her address, the spokesperson from the Ministry, the Director, Curriculum and Evaluation, Mrs Aneeta Ghoorah, recalled that some 10 470 students both in Mauritius and Rodrigues, aged 15-18, have followed JAM programmes which aim to equip youngsters make better choices for the future. She recalled that much of JAM programmes which revolve around the three pillars, namely, financial literacy, employability/work readiness and entrepreneurship are in line with what the Ministry is implementing in schools.

Mrs Ghoorah underlined that JAM also aims at furthering entrepreneurship skills. The contents of many of the programmes adapted to the Mauritian context, she added, complement the school curriculum, and provide to students an early exposure to non-academic issues and subjects which will assume their full importance later in their professional life. The signature of the MOU will also help JAM to have access to more secondary schools, especially the private ones, said Mrs. Ghoorah.
For her part, the president of JAM, Mrs Audrey D’Hotman De Villiers, stated that through this MOU the Ministry and JAM will complement each other. She highlighted that JAM’s mission is to serve the youth of Mauritius by teaching them entrepreneurial and life skills.

It also aims at helping the youth become more productive, responsible and ready for the challenges of the world of business in an emerging and changing world economy, she added. Through these programmes, said Mrs D’Hotman De Villiers, students will be given the technical knowledge that will render them more attractive to employers. She recalled that JAM places much emphasis on the value of education as a tool to facilitate flexibility, employability and work preparedness of our youth, amongst others. Education, she said, is not simply about passing exams but also about building the individual with the right skills and attitudes.
