Mauritius : AFD allocates an envelope of about Rs 20 million for development projects in Mauritius

The Agence Française de Developpement (AFD) has allocated a grant of Euros 500 000 (approximately Rs 20 million) to the Government of Mauritius to support project preparation and capacity building in various emerging fields. The grant agreement Fond d’Expertise et de Renforcement des Capacités was signed yesterday afternoon in Port Louis by the French Ambassador to Mauritius, Mr Laurent Garnier and the Financial Secretary, Mr Dev Manraj.

The envelope has been earmarked for studies and capacity building for several priority projects namely: feasibility study on the implementation of the submarine fibre connectivity to Rodrigues; study on the medical waste management; blue economy and the seafood industry; and the management of rainwater and drainage system. In his address on the occasion, the Financial Secretary underlined that the AFD has been a strategic and proactive partner regarding the various financial and technical assistance being provided to support the country in the implementation of priority projects. This he said, has helped in supporting growth and in helping Mauritius achieved the status of a high income country.

Mr Manraj also expressed on behalf of the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, GCSK, FRCP, his appreciation for efforts made by the French Government through the AFD to the Government of Mauritius as regards the assistance being provided in the fields of: energy , infrastructure, port and environment. For his part, the French Ambassador, Mr Laurent Garnier, stated that the funding will be used to finance feasibility studies and provide technical assistance to major priority projects and also in capacity building. He also emphasised on the various interventions of the AFD with regards to supporting sustainable development projects.

Mauritius has since 2007 benefitted from an envelope of about Rs 8 billion in the form of loans and grants from the AFD considered as the second bilateral donor agency aimed at supporting the country in the implementation of its economic transition.AFD operates mainly in the fields of environment and energy, public infrastructure, regional cooperation and support to the private sector. AFD is also providing assistance in economic diversification and helping in preparing the country for the next stage of development within the context of a growing and more sustainable globalisation.
