An additional 2,000 Victorians will be able to access drug treatment services across the state through the Napthine Government's historic $38 million investment in treatment services. Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge today announced the recipients of the Victorian Coalition Government's new funding to address alcohol and drug issues, including ice use in metropolitan and regional Victoria. This investment will significantly improve access to drug treatment in areas that have previously lacked these important services and represents the single largest investment in growing drug treatment services we've seen in Victoria.
Drug and alcohol services will receive more than $29 million to expand their services, particularly in rural and regional Victoria, including; Funding for up to 10 new rural residential withdrawal beds in Hume, Gippsland, and Mildura, the first ever state-funded withdrawal beds in these areas. A 25 per cent increase in funding for youth alcohol and drug treatment services, with a particular focus on at-risk youth. This includes a 64% funding increase in Gippsland for youth treatment services and a 58% increase in Hume.
Additional funding for community based drug treatment services across most of the state, particularly in Grampians and Hume. This means more Victorians will be able to access important services such as counselling and non residential withdrawal services.
Ms Wooldridge said these new withdrawal beds will make a significant difference to these communities by providing access to treatment close to home. Significant planning is also underway for Victoria's first ever Mother-and-Baby drug withdrawal unit in Heidelberg to support new mothers beat drug addiction, while still developing bonds with their children. Emergency departments in Gippsland, Bairnsdale, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Wimmera and Warrnambool have received funding to improve responses to alcohol and drug affected individuals. Through this investment, the Napthine Government has now funded 27 emergency departments across Victoria to better identify and support patients affected by ice, alcohol and other drugs. "These initiatives are a key part of the Coalition's whole-of-government Reducing the alcohol and drug toll: Victoria's plan 2013-2017 and will improve how people with alcohol and drug problems are assisted throughout their care, treatment and recovery."
