Australia : IMARC makes Melbourne a mining powerhouse

Publish Date : 31-Oct-2014

More than 3000 delegates from 30 countries attended last month's inaugural International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) in Melbourne, signalling the city's emergence of a mining services powerhouse. Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Peter Ryan hailed IMARC as an outstanding success, vindicating the Victorian Coalition Government's decision to establish what is now a key event of the global mining calendar. Mr Ryan said the Coalition Government-supported event attracted mining and resources industry leaders, key government representatives and global policy makers.

"We attracted almost 400 high-calibre speakers, from the USA's Robert Friedland to Australia's own Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest, Chairman of Fortescue Metals, a truly outstanding effort in just our first year. "The associated IMARC Exhibition attracted over 70 Australian and international companies, showcasing some amazing and innovative technology. "None more so than Bendigo's Australian Turntable Company, which is creating innovative turntable solutions and in doing so is delivering significant efficiency gains for mining companies right across the world, while supporting highly skilled local manufacturing jobs in one of our oldest regional cities.

"Overall, the event proved a highly effective platform for promoting Victoria's capabilities to the global mining sector, enabling local companies to connect with major industry players, as well as potential investors and partners." Mr Ryan said the Coalition Government had committed $2 million to establish IMARC under its Jobs in the 21st Century strategy as part of its new $12 million Trade Mission Program to bring delegations from high-growth export markets to Victoria. "After the success of IMARC 2014, we are now looking at ways to further expand the conference in 2015 in line with its aim of establishing the event as one of the world's top four mining and resources industry conferences," Mr Ryan said.

"We believe we can establish IMARC among the global 'grand slam' of mining conference, placing Melbourne squarely on the map as a mining services powerhouse. "Melbourne and Victoria have a key role to play in Australia's mining sector, and we will continue to look at new and innovative ways where we can continue to capitalise. "Mining, in all its forms, is one of the areas we can continue to attract private sector investment to our state."
