United Kingdom : Balfour Beatty awarded Ł9.5m Derby Link Road contract
Publish Date : 01-Nov-2014
Balfour Beatty has been appointed by Derby City Council to deliver the Ł9.5m T12 Derby Link Road scheme.
Involving the construction of a new, approximately 2.4km long, single carriageway between Wilmore Road and Holmleigh Way, the scheme will also include the creation of two bridges spanning Cuttle Brook and the associated drainage and service works.
The link road will provide access to development plots in Derby’s new high tech business centre, known as Derby’s Global Technology Cluster, providing valuable regeneration and investment opportunities in the area, including up to 8,000 new jobs.
Balfour Beatty has worked closely with Derby City Council over the last year to ensure the on-going viability of the scheme by reviewing value engineering options to maximise their budget and funding streams. During this process, Balfour Beatty reviewed the geotechnical design, generating significant improvements, as well as refining the proposed drainage strategy.
Stephen Semple, Balfour Beatty Managing Director for North Central said: "Building on our successful relationship with Derby City Council, we look forward to delivering the T12 Derby Link Road which, once complete, will provide access to Derby's new Global Technology Cluster, 1.5 million square feet of mixed commercial developments including offices, industrial, leisure and retail."
The scheme is being delivered under the Midlands Highway Alliance Medium Schemes 2 framework, which includescommitments to creating local employment opportunities and enhancing skills. This is the second scheme Balfour Beatty has been awarded since being appointed to this framework in May 2014, the first being the East West Link Road for Lincolnshire County Council.
Works are due to commence this week and are expected to conclude in the autumn 2015.
