Publish Date : 02-Dec-2014

On Wednesday, a medical oxygen manufacturing plant dubbed “Hewa Tele” was launched in western Kenya in a move to realize affordable and accessible healthcare to citizens. The oxygen plant is established in a joint venture by the General Electric (GE) Foundation, the Centre for Population Health and Development, Siaya County and the National Government. This unit is the first of its kind in the county.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta speaking at the launch in Siaya County, stated that it is through strategic partnerships that delivery of critical healthcare solutions to all Kenyans including vulnerable members of the society can be fast-tracked. Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) initiatives comes as a new approach for mobilizing resources in addressing the country’s health needs in a sustainable manner. She further added that, “This plant, which offers a lifeline to Siaya residents and beyond, demonstrates what we can achieve with the right partnerships between the government and the private sector.”

The oxygen manufacturing plant forms part of the Millenium Development Goals project’s Objective 8 in the Millennium Cities strategy. In near further, plans are to replicate the project across more counties for increasing oxygen supply in the country, which will enable district hospitals supply oxygen at affordable prices to health facilities in the surrounding region. According to Margaret, the oxygen manufacturing facility has capacity to produce adequate oxygen to cater for over 72,000 critically ill patients in Siaya and neighboring counties per year, and it also comes as a relief to the many motorcycle taxi accident victims. She added, “The Plant will also provide affordable oxygen to public and private facilities in the region that would otherwise refer patients to other hospitals due to lack of oxygen.”
