Algeria,South Africa : SOUTH AFRICA introduces Joint Aeronautics Centre along with ALGERIA

Pretoria’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the University of Blida in Algeria will be establishing a Joint Center of Excellence in aeronautics research. In this regards a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the International Exhibition of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in Algeria.

This move which is a mutually beneficial initiative, would be jointly facilitated by the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the South African Department of Science and Technology. It is expected to strengthen Algeria in the field of aeronautics and encourage the technology bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Both countries would cooperate in various fields such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Avionics and Ground Systems, Aircraft Structures, Gas Turbines, Wind Tunnels, Store Integration, Radar and Aero Acoustics among others. This partnership would also support knowledge transfers by way of staff exchange programmes, postgraduate student programmes, joint seminars and workshops, joint development programmes and co-supervision on postgraduate programmes leading to common publications.

Major General (retd) Desmong Barker, Acting Executive Director at CSIR’s Defence, Peace, Safety and Security Division said, “Outside of South Africa, there are really no other significant aeronautics research capabilities and facilities in Africa. Algeria’s equivalent Science and Technology department understands the requirement for Africa to take ownership of its aeronautics research requirements and are delighted to close the African aeronautics research chasm through collaboration with South Africa.”
