Taiwan Province of China : PEGASUS smartphone disclosed by Asustek in China targeting Xiaomi

Publish Date : 29-Dec-2014

Taiwan-based smartphone maker Asustek disclosed its Pegasus X002 smartphone on Dec. 23 intended at the low-end smartphone market in China where Chinese rival Xiaomi at present dominates. The company associated with main Chinese telecom operators China Mobile and China Telecom for developing the Pegasus X002. It comes equipped with MediaTek chipsets, is priced at 799 yuan (US$130), and is likely to improve Asustek's sales to above 700,000 units next year, on top of China Mobile and China Telcom's customer base. Asustek had made a customized T45 smartphone for China Mobile in August which was a 4.5-inch smartphone with a MediaTek chipset. It was the first time Asustek adopted chipsets excluding from Qualcomm or Intel.

Some were concerned that the Pegasus X002 and ZenFone would be competitors as both are budget smartphones. The Pegasus X002, however, is a product completely made for sale through telecom carrier channels whereas consumers could purchase ZenFone from online stores directly. Asustek CEO Jerry Shen said ZenFone and Pegasus will be two weapons that will bring the company into China's top ten next year. The monthly shipment of ZenFones was 1.5 Million as of the 4th quarter this year and is likely to increase to between 13-14 million next year. China will account for approximately 800,000 units and looks to be the fourth largest market for the company. The largest market is made up of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia in the Southeast Asia region. Taiwan and then India are the second and third.
