ALTANA, a specialty chemicals firm, is strengthening its presence in Brazil with the acquisition of Premiata and Overlake. Premiata and Overlake employ 140 and 70 people, respectively. Premiata produces printing inks and coatings for the packaging industry at its facilities Premiata Tintas and Premiata Especialidades Químicas.

Overlake specializes in overprint varnishes. ALTANA management board member Martin Babilas said: "through these acquisitions we are systematically expanding our business in the growing Brazilian market."

The company's Actega division will have its own manufacturing facilities in Brazil. The division will be combined to form a new company called ACTEGA do Brasil. ACTEGA division President Roland Peter said: "taking over Premiata and Overlake means we can significantly expand our portfolio of solutions particularly for the Brazilian packaging industry." ALTANA operates a production and research facility in Brazil. The division is engaged in developing insulating materials for the electrical and electronics industry.
