The Kenya Tourism Board announced that it has engaged in a campaign, in order to get back direct charter flights from Europe and other destinations to Mombasa. In Europe among them UK, Germany, Italy, Poland, Czech Republic and Scandinavia countries, the board targets both the key markets as it is looking to re-create tourism sector which has witnessed low international arrivals this year, as per managing director Muriithi Ndegwa, The number of charter flights into the country, mainly the tourism city of Mombasa has drastically gone down from about 15 weekly flights to below five since last May after withdrawals following insecurity cases in the region.
"We are going out there to reassure the world that Kenya is a safe holiday destination," said Ndegwa, KTB targets to bring back Condor from Germany by early next year.” In addition, the campaign is also intended to return of Meridiana and Neos airline which both fly in tourists from the Italian market. He said the tourism ministry has provided funds through a taskforce funding platform, in support of the campaign to bring charter flights into the country. Further, on the weekly schedule, enter air will be flying to Mombasa.
"As destination, we are very very happy with this charter flights coming to Mombasa. We have embarked on a corporate marketing strategy that will ensure the return of the charter which are a big support for the Coast where as a destination, relies on leisure travel," said Ndegwa. The comeback of the three chartered flights this month, which brought about 300 tourists, has brought hope to the tourism sector, which has been brought to its knees over the last one year due to insecurity. Nevertheless, the board also aims to raise the country to attract visitors during the European summer season to capitalise on the missed out opportunity during the current winter period.
