It is key to get the juiciest fruit, careful planning and preparation, and hence Lemeul Mantey who earns his livelihood by harvesting papayas has decided to get the best out of his trees, which are growing in the farming area of Nsawam, west of the Ghanaian capital of Accra. He said : "If you want to kill the weeds, you put on your knapsack sprayer, put in water and chemicals, take your protective clothes and then spray. You kill all the weeds, that's the practice." Although Ghana may not grow as many papayas as Nigeria, the country was earlier a major exporter of the brightly colored fruit.
With labor and input costs growing for those in the agricultural industry, farmers in Ghana face huge pressure to sustain their business. Malindube Kombase, regional director of Mobile Business Clinic, said : "Agribusiness for me denotes the collective business activities that are performed from farm to the dining table. These involve input supply, the production of food and the actual delivery of food to the end user." The group Kombase runs is dedicated to helping farmers and other workers in the agricultural sector boost their operations by providing training in good business practices. Kombase said : "Most agribusiness entrepreneurs are not running their companies as businesses, but rather as lifestyle companies. Without much vision, without enough corporate governance structures, without proper record keeping systems."
