Morocco : EU, Morocco Conclude Agreement On Geographical Indications Protection

The EU and Morocco concluded on Friday negotiations related to an agreement on the mutual protection of their geographical indications (GI) that will enable them to better protect their respective geographical indications for food products. The GI acts as a certification that the product possesses certain qualities, is made according to traditional methods, or enjoys a certain reputation, due to its geographical origin. The agreement is also aimed at boosting trade exchanges for agriculture products and foodstuffs, said a statement by the European Commission.
The agreement will promote and protect quality products and serve the interests of farmers and agriculture industry in Morocco and the EU, said Commissioner for agriculture and rural development Phil Hogan. For Moroccan agriculture minister Aziz Akhannouch, this agreement is a real chance for our producers who have an authentic know-how to optimize the value added of their production. Morocco is the first country south of the EU to take this big step in order to promote and protect the quality of agricultural production.
