Publish Date : 11-Feb-2015
In order to benefit the farmers of Kizhakkukarai Vaikal irrigation system in Pallipalayam taluk, the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation has launched a direct purchase centre. The centre, which launched operations on January 18, has been established under the Indian Government's Decentralised Paddy Procurement Programme for the present kharif season.
The programme proposed to set up the centre in a non-Cauvery delta area to shield the farmers from the drop in price of paddy in open market, and guarantee maximum profit to them. The Kizhakkukarai Vaikal irrigation system has seen the raising of paddy in 4,282 hectares in the Pallipalayam taluk.
The District Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy asked to set up the procurement centre in the taluk, as the Agriculture Department is expecting a production of over 25,000 tonnes of paddy in this season. Established in the Elanthakuttai village's Ponkaliamman Marriage Hall, the centre, was opened by P.Thangamani, Minister for Industries, on January 18. The civil supplies corporation has set a purchase price of Rs. 1,470 per quintal, which includes a subsidy of Rs. 70, for Grade 'A' (fine) variety paddy, and Rs. 1,410 per quintal, including Rs.50 in subsidy for common variety of paddy.
