Tanzania : TANZANIA to assess public procurement law

Publish Date : 12-Feb-2015

The government has announced that it will assess the public procurement law to enable institutions which seek to buy used machineries and equipment for students' practical trainings after theoretical studies in classes to do so. A little before the 30th National Institute of Transport (NIT) graduation ceremony recently, a state official said Vocational Educational and Training Authority (VETA) and National Institute of Transport (NIT) are among the public institutions that call for the law to be assessed so as to enable them to purchase machines used for training.

The official said new machineries are costlier for public institutions to buy, due to which some of them fail to teach students during practicals. He noted that it's impossible for the National Institute of Transport which offers aviation courses to purchase new aircraft, hence as the government will try to see is there is potential for these kind of institutions to buy used machines for students' practicals.

The official also said The Vocational Educational and Training Authority (VETA) cannot buy new vehicles just for training purpose.
He added that this will not work, new vehicles are unaffordable for them due to the high cost and the procurement law does not let them buy used ones. He assured that the government will explore ways to solve these challenges.
