Philippines : NFA to intensify palay procurement as farmgate price of unmilled rice starts falling

Publish Date : 12-Feb-2015

As the farmgate cost of unmilled rice have started declining to P14 to P16 per kilogram in several areas, the National Food Authority (NFA) has announced its plans of intensifying the procurement of palay or unhusked rice in 2015. Renan Dalisay, NFA administrator said "massive" purchases would be implemented in Iloilo, Palawan, Sultan Kudarat, Antique and Isabela provinces.

Making it more lucrative for farmers to sell their produce to traders, the farmgate cost of palay has been placed at P18.90 per kilogram on an average, as of the second week of January.

The NFA procures clean and dry unhusked rice at P17 per kilogram, offering extra incentives like graduated delivery fee of up to a maximum P0.50 per kilogram, drying incentive fee of P0.20 per kilogram, and Cooperative Development Incentive Fund aid of P0.30 per kilogram.

The food agency aims to purchase 189,845 metric tons (MT) of the unhusked rice from January to June 2015. The NFA has already procured 89,497 50-kilogram bags of palay in total, as of 9th February.
