India : COTTON farmers seek direct procurement of the produce
Publish Date : 17-Feb-2015
On Saturday, K.P. Perumal, district secretary, Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, suggested that the Cotton Corporation of India could procure cotton directly from farmers in a move to offset the price decline. Cotton farmers are very much concerned regarding the declining price of cotton and seeks better price for their produce. With good amount of rainfall, cotton production witnessed an increasing trend, however the market price is not up to the desired level, claims farmers, and so, the affected cotton farmers seeks intervention of the district administration to ensure a better price.
Currently, price of one quintal of cotton ranges from Rs. 2,800 to Rs.3,200, which does not even meet expenditure incurred on cultivation of cotton that was raised mostly in Kovilpatti block.
Cultivation of cotton is also carried out in neighbouring areas like Vilathikulam, Ottapidaram and Ettayapuram. During last year, the produce fetched good price at Rs.5,500 to Rs.6,000 per quintal.
As compared with last year, cotton production in the region had gone up by 60 per cent, but the prices were disappointing. Cotton cultivation is labour intensive, and one acre of cotton picking costs Rs. 1,200. Perumal urged the government to fix minimum support price for cotton. According to Joint Director of Agriculture N.K. Dhakshinamoorthy, the area under cotton had increased to 6,700 hectares in 2014 against 5000 hectares in 2013.
