India : BHEL seeks partners for INDIAN ARMY's Rs.50,000 crore contract

Publish Date : 07-Mar-2015

Indian government-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) announced in January that it was seeking partners to make mounted gun systems for the armed forces. The Indian Army would offer a contract worth Rs 50,000 crore for such guns in the near future, and BHEL is looking for a technology partner to take part in the bid.

A month ago, the company had formed a group with two other state-owned enterprises, Mishra Dhatu Nigam and Hindustan Shipyard, to build submarines locally. The group is planning to jointly bid for the Indian Navy's proposed P-75 (I) project. The project will see 6 submarnies getting built at an Indian shipyard at a aggregate cost of Rs 51,000 crore.

Established in 1964 and given the "Maharatna" status in 2013, this is an interesting diversification for India's major producer of power plant equipment, especially as it follows the National Democratic Alliance's call for "Make in India" and stress on locally made defence equipment.
