Thailand : MRTA starts boring tunnel for BLUE LINE expansion project

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) is set to start boring tunnel under the Chao Phraya river for its Blue Line expansion scheme. The deep tunnel boring scheme will be Thailand's second tunnel under the river. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha will chair the the tunnel boring ceremony.
MRTA board chairman Gen Yodyuth Boonyatikarn said the scheme is part of the expansion for Bangkok's Blue Line mass transit program.
He said Chan-o-cha will chair the launching ceremony of the tunnel boring machine of the second tunnel under the Chao Phraya river as part of the second phase expansion of the MRT Blue Line from Sanam Chai to Tha Phra.
On the procurement of the service operator for the Green Line expansion, the MRTA is waiting for the official note from the cabinet meeting that has agreed to continue talks with the Bangkok Metro Public Company Limited (BMCL), which the current operator of the Blue Line, hire workers under the public private partnership (PPP) net cost model.
The MRTA chairman said the talk will include the expansion of the BMCL service from Bang Sue station to Tao Poon station to provide a link to the Purple Line, while the service of the Blue Line extension would start in 2017.
