Austria,Brazil,Germany : AUSTRIAN AIRLINES to initiate a fleet renewal program for its mid-haul aircraft
Publish Date : 17-Mar-2015
Austrian Airlines, the flag carrier of Austria, has made an announcement on its strategy to revamp its ageing mid-haul fleet and plans to accomplish the job by 2017. The carrier, a subsidiary of German Lufthansa Group, has planned to launch this fleet renewal program in the fall and aims to deploy 17 Embraer E-195 jets, now being operated by Lufthansa CityLine, to replace its aging fleet of 21 Fokker 70/100 aircraft. Lufthansa CityLine will be given Bombardier CRJ900 NextGens for its offering of the Embraer aircraft to Austrian Airlines.
Eurowings, which is undergoing a conversion process to become a pan-European business to manage low-fare flight operations from different global bases except Germany, will offer this Bombardier jets to Lufthansa CityLine. Austrian, which is headquartered in Vienna International Airport, will launch its fleet renewal process after its receipt of formal clearance from its supervisory board. The board is slated to meet on 29th of this month to discuss on this issue. Fokkers can accommodate 80 to 100 passengers as against Embraer aircraft’s offering of 120 seats.
No decision on providing Austrian Airlines with additional mid-haul plane is still to be taken. The E-195s have been manufactured between 2009 and 2012, representing an average age of four years, as against average age of 21 years for the Fokker fleet. A new E-195 jet carries a price tag of around €52 million ($55 million).
The bigger Embraer aircraft facilitates its operators to save around 18% in fuel expenses for every seat.
Work has already been started to settle the financial aspect to help Austrian Airlines in its aircraft procurement move. The carrier has revealed before the media that it will have to invest about €800 million to acquire the jets. The CEO of Austrian Airlines Jaan Albrecht recently has revealed that they have also mulled over the Bombardier C-Series aircraft.
