Indonesia : GOVT. to restrict foreign vessels to encourage local shipbuilding
Publish Date : 19-Mar-2015
The government has announced that it will start restricting foreign vessels carrying local aquaculture products in Indonesian waters to promote development for indigenous shipbuilders, starting 2016.
According to a circular letter on aquaculture-vessel licensing issued recently, foreign-flagged transportation ships (usually tramp service vessels) will have to wait at specified checkpoints to receive live fish cargo from locally built ships.
A senior official of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry said the checkpoint ports exist in Kendari in Southeast Sulawesi, Anambas in Batam, Kijang in the Riau Islands as well as one in Lampung.
The official said foreign transportation ships will be required to dock there while awaiting domestic ships to receive their cargo from fish farms and aquaculture production centers. He added that the government is planning to phase out all foreign-owned and foreign-made vessels in the future, making sure the domestic shipbuilding sector would have a market to supply.
