South Africa : DOE - SOUTH AFRICA prepares for third nuclear vendor workshop
Publish Date : 24-Mar-2015
The Department of Energy (DoE) has announced that as it bores ahead with its nuclear build scheme designed to add 9 600 megawatts of nuclear-powered energy to the national power grid by 2030, South Africa is preparing for its third nuclear supplier workshop. The DoE said it was bound by the National Development Plan to fully review and engage with the supplier countries.
The announcement has made after the signing of co-operation deals between South Africa and the US, South Korea, Russia, France, Japan and China – efficiently a tender process to procure equipment, skills and expertise for the construction and management of new nuclear power plants in South Africa.
The DoE said : "These are the countries that have pressurised water reactor nuclear technology, similar to the Koeberg nuclear power plant in the Western Cape. South Africa has been safely using this technology for the past 30 years."
Scheduled to take place in the last week of March, the third and final workshop, between state officials and representatives of Canada and Japan, will provide the latter two countries with an opportunity to demonstrate their nuclear technology offerings for potential procurement and use in South Africa's programme. This is expected to include reactors, building expertise and training.
