India : MINISTER - Govt. to relax quality standards for wheat procurement
Publish Date : 04-Apr-2015
India's food minister Ram Vilas Paswan has announced that the government has decided to compensate farmers for the damage resulting from the untimely rains in March by relaxing the quality standards for wheat procurement. Paswan said that states have requested a bonus of Rs 100 per quintal for wheat over and above the Rs 1,450 per quintal minimum support price to help the farmers.
During his visit to Chandigarh to look at the damage caused to the crops, the minister said, "The Food Corporation of India needs to relax quality standards for wheat procurement for damage caused by the hail and heavy rains." He added that the government of Haryana has requested to relax the quality standards for wheat procurement for public distribution system.
The minister has said this at a time when some of the wheat importers of India have entered talks with global traders to purchase 70,000-80,000 tonnes of Australian wheat. Unseasonal rains across the planted regions may lead the second-largest wheat grower in the world, India, to see a fall in production to 93-94 million tonnes this year, as against 95.9 million tonnes in FY14.
