Indian minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution Ram Vilas Paswan has announced that the central government will increase the purchase of wheat in Uttar Pradesh (UP) to ensure the small and marginal farmers benefit from minimum support price (MSP).
Speaking at Circuit House here on Tuesday, the minister said that FCI in UP is focusing on purchase of food grains in UP, especially in the eastern part of the state. Paswan said that to achieve the goal of wheat procurement, fixed as 30 LMT for UP region, the central government has formed a joint committee for sampling and analysis of wheat in affected districts.
He said about 20 people having 4.4 crore cardholders in the state are benefiting through the distribution of around 6 LMT of food grains through various programs of the Indian government.
UP needs 48 LMT of wheat and 32 LMT of rice annually. However, nearly 65 LMT food grains have been inducted from Punjab/Haryana, because of low purchase in UP. The minister added that 13.3 LMT wheat and 17.65 LMT rice is currently available in UP, which is enough t for 4 and 7 months respectively.
