Publish Date : 16-Apr-2015

Non implementation of state drug policy was depriving people from fundamental right of equitable access to medicines and hence was not in the public interest, said, Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK).

President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan in a statement stated that 21% of the population in the state do not have access to medicines because of lack of purchasing power. According to him, the government spends only 02% of health budget on health while as household expenditure on drugs in Jammu and Kashmir is 90.39%. He also alleged that the government has proved to be unsuccessful towards implementation of state drug policy sanctioned earlier in 2012.

DAK President said, “The concept of essential drug list of around 300 drugs was to provide quality and cost effective medicines to patients in government hospitals and do away with inessential drugs. These essential drugs are to be made available at all times in adequate amounts without any stock-outs by effective procurement and stringent quality control mechanism.”

As per his suggestion, Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) considered to be a pioneer in the existing drug procurement can be replicated in the state as it has an efficient drug distribution system.
