India : NTPC decides to centralise vendor procurement process

Publish Date : 22-Apr-2015

India's largest power producer, NTPC, has come up with a decision to centralise its vendor procurement process and has already commenced with the process of enlisting its vendors in a move to reduce its procurement costs.

On yearly basis, NTPC awards contracts worth around Rs 1,600 crore and procures materials for operation & maintenance amounting to another Rs 2,000 crore (in addition to the company's expansion projects).

According to the company, “Till now, for operational requirement, each of NTPC thermal power stations used to procure through separate tenders resulting in participation largely from local vendors. It would lead to increased cost of procurement, leading to chances of cartelisation, long procurement times and uncertainties over the procurement period. All these led to substantial increased costs.”

Aiming at addressing this issue, NTPC will be expanding its vendor base and is also gearing to set in uniformity in procurement at all its plants.

Beginning with, NTPC will enlist its vendors at all power stations who will have access to an opportunity to supply at any of NTPC plants and thus increase its business substantially. Upon listing, it will be valid for three years and they will receive all tender notices of any plants.
