Publish Date : 22-Apr-2015
The Scottish National Party (SNP) seeks entire breakdown of UK defence spending, including component costs and the location of major projects. The new party’s 2015 general election manifesto, said, “With taxpayers in Scotland contributing billions of pounds more than the Ministry of Defence currently spends in Scotland we believe that a far larger proportion of the defence procurement budget should be spent in Scotland.”
“There should be a strategy developed by the MoD to ensure more small and medium sized enterprises in Scotland are part of the manufacturing support chain for major defence projects.”
Also, it was committed to use public contracts to provide community benefits, specifically employment and training and supporting community schemes, and have even announced that the SNP will be working towards ensuring that all suppliers to the Scottish government pay the living wage, through procurement guidance.
Party leader Nicola Sturgeon promised to raise public spending: "We want to see modest spending increases - the equivalent of increasing departmental spending by 0.5 per cent above inflation - in each year of the next parliament.” During last week, Scottish deputy first minister John Swinney, stated that a strong team of SNP MPs at Westminster would support placement of of prompt payment measures for small businesses into law.
