China,South Africa : SOUTH AFRICA, CHINA sign two further nuclear energy cooperation agreements
Publish Date : 27-Apr-2015
As part of preparations towards the potential construction of new nuclear power plants (NPPs), South Africa has entered a further two nuclear energy cooperation deals with China.
The agreements have been signed as the first group of South African workers started an NPP training course at a Chinese university, as agreed under an earlier pact.
Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa (Necsa) president Phumzile Tshelane inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 21st April with China Nuclear Energy Engineering Group (CNEC) president Jun Gu. The MoU would see South African trainees getting trained in China on NPP construction.
Necsa also entered a cooperation deal with the Chinese State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) for training on project management for nuclear power projects. Under the deal, South Africa will have to send project managers to construction sites in China where demonstration CAP1400 units are proposed.
Tshelane said, "Through this collaboration with China we are enhancing our skills base with practical experience from China's massive nuclear build program. This also cements the relationship between the two countries who are indispensable partners in the exploitation of nuclear technology."
The latest deals follow those inked in December 2014, including an MoU on a nuclear fuel cycle partnership, a funding framework agreement to build a new NPP in South Africa, and a deal on nuclear personnel training. Those deals follow on from the November inking of an inter-governmental framework agreement on nuclear cooperation by the two countries, a preparatory step towards the potential construction of Chinese NPPs in South Africa.
