WORLD BANK approves $120.6m credit for VANUATU aviation sector

The World Bank has sanctioned $US59.5 million ($F120.6m) credit to improve the safety and efficiency of Vanuatus aviation sector.

According to the bank's statement, the project will invest in major aviation infrastructure and navigational and communication equipment in Vanuatus three international airports to include new runway lighting and improved safety and security equipment for luggage and cargo screening.

Bauerfield International Airport will get urgent runway rehabilitation along with a new domestic terminal.

The project will strengthen Vanuatu's aviation regulator and institutions through development of an Airport Master Plan and an Aviation Sector Strategy, and also delivering targeted technical assistance and training to identify and support the sector's long-term needs.

Funding of the project will be through credit from the International Development Association, the World Bank's fund for the poorest countries.
