Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) has awarded Birr 16.4 million contract to IT vendor SS Communications for the supply of 2,000 Point of Sale (POS) terminals.

According to Ephrem Mekonnen, Communications Director at the Bank, in February 2015, the tender for the provision of POS terminals was floated and was opened on March 10, 2015.

As the bidders did not fulfill the qualification criteria, an earlier bid for the provision and installation of the POS terminals was cancelled. In the last nine months of 2014/2015 budget year, CBE’s POS terminals had facilitated 228,903 transactions valued Birr 553 million.

Installation of the current POS terminals will be done in four months, thereby adhering to the bank's target of installing 2,000 POS machines during this budget year.

In Ethiopia, CBE is the first bank to introduce Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) and POS terminals. Presently, the bank operates 10,000 POS machines and 627 ATMs.
