South Africa : DOE - SOUTH AFRICA to finalize nuclear procurement process in 2015
Publish Date : 04-Jun-2015
A senior official has announced that the government of South Africa will complete the nuclear procurement process by the end of 2015 in a fresh effort to fulfill the country's growing power demand.
Deputy director general of nuclear at the Department of Energy (DOE), Zimamele Mbambo, said that to serve the purpose, the government has invited potential nuclear supplier countries to come and show how they would take part in South Africa's nuclear build program.
The South African government has entered inter-state pacts with prospective vendor countries, such as Russia, the US, France, China and South Korea.
However, the official said the pacts did not mean that concrete agreements have been signed.
Speaking to the parliamentary portfolio committee on energy, Mbambo said this only meant that bilateral deals were reached based on the interest shown by potential bidders.
He said, "We have concluded the pre-procurement phase by concluding demonstrations by all prospective countries who have expressed interest to participate in our nuclear build program to ensure that the process is transparent, is open and is fair and allows all the governments to submit their proposals."
