India : GOVERNMENT aiming at satellite connectivity to confirm PMJDY

Publish Date : 16-Jun-2015

The government is looking for satellite connectivity to secure the Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) for expanding financial inclusion, enters the progressive following stage after hitting the crucial 10 crore bank accounts turning point.

Connectivity has been brought in as a serious constraint in rural areas in a number of states, reminding the government to consider VSAT (very small aperture terminal) technology that is considered secure and offers uninterrupted connectivity using satellites.

The government official familiar with discussions on the matter adds,"There are different options to ensure connectivity in rural hinterland. We are exploring if unfettered connectivity could be provided through VSAT to banking correspondents."

Under the scheme, more than 70% of the accounts opened are dormant and connectivity is being viewed as a significant factor to lure small account holders to continue operating them. More than 70% of the 10 crore bank accounts opened under the scheme have zero balance.

The talks has been started between the department of financial services and the department of telecommunications (DoT) for waiver of some charges to lower operational expenditure and make the VSAT option commercially executable on a long-term basis.

Because of its secure characteristics, higher bandwidth and reliable nature, AReserve Bank of India technical group had also favoured VSAT connectivity over others.
