India : GOVT. closes world's single-largest tender to procure 50 million LED bulbs

Publish Date : 22-Jun-2015

After the government finalized the single-largest tender in the world for the procurement of 50 million LED bulbs, energy-efficient LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs will now be available at a lower price than CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps).

Since January 2014 when the first tender was finalized, this tender has brought down the price of an LED bulb to one-fourth, or Rs 77 on an average.

LED bulbs worth Rs 385 crore will be supplied by firms like Philips, Osram, Bajaj Electricals and Crompton Greaves, said an industry executive.

Energy Efficiency Services (EESL), a partnership firm of the public sector undertakings of the Ministry of Power, finalized the tender on Wednesday.

The bulbs will be sold to homes in different states through power distribution firms.

EESL is the nodal agency for the purchase and distribution and it has so far purchased 25 million bulbs.
