In a bid to reduce reliance on foreign providers, the procurement planners of Turkey are taking new steps to further nationalize the country's proposed space programs.
The Gokturk-1 observation satellite to Turkey was shipped by prime contractor Telespazio and partner Thales Alenia Space, early last month.
The Turkish Defense Ministry is the designated end user of the program.
Turkish industry was engaged in the system design and development and provided system components, a European partnership built the satellite.
Aselsan was tasked with ground segment components, image data reception and processing, Tusas Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) supplied parts for the payload structure.
TUBITAK, the Turkish state scientific research institute, developed telecommand and telemetry ciphering devices.
The Gokturk-1 contract with the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), Turkey's defense procurement office, also involved the construction of the USET satellite integration and test center in Turkey, opened in a high-profile ceremony on 21st May.
Speaking at the ceremony, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "With this facility we can say that Turkey is now among the countries that have a say in space programs."
