India : TAX COLLECTION DEPT. floats tender to procure 13 currency-counting machines with fake note detectors

Publish Date : 24-Jun-2015

Opposition says NCP corporators have claimed a share in contractor's profit and activists point to delay in the procurement of machines, while tender has been floated for 13 machines.

At the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), it looks like it isn't so, while the purchase of fake note detectors is mostly a preventive step.

The tax collection department has, in a reverse move, floated a tender to purchase 13 currency-counting machines with fake note detectors after an insider report, which showed that many have deposited counterfeit notes in bulk under the guise of property tax.

The massive task of counting the whole collection - mostly in notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 - lies in front of the department, with the tax deadline long past.

Records show that nearly 60,066 people have paid a total of Rs 49.53 crore in property tax (between April 1 and May 31).

The department earned Rs 20.53 crore more than the earlier financial year.
