Publish Date : 13-Jul-2015

The indigenously-built supersonic surface-to-air missile 'Akash' was officially inducted in the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Friday.

Having a speed 3 times faster than that of sound, the missile, can hit 8 targets at a time.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar handed over Akash to IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, during a ceremony held at the Maharajpur Air Force Station.

Parrikar, who witnessed the live show of the missile, commended the efforts of Defence Research and Development Organisation, Bharat Electronics Limited and public and private industries and said they had worked closely to resolve several challenges that arose in the production of the Akash missile system.

The IAF chief said that a high success rate had been attained during the tests of the missile system.

He said plans were underway for procurement of more Akash systems.

A potent supersonic mobile multi-directional, multi-target air defence system, Akash is capable of simultaneously engaging multiple air targets using sophisticated multi-function phased array radars.
