Canada : CANADA GOVERNMENT award two NSPS contracts for small Coast Guard vessels

Publish Date : 15-Jul-2015

The Canada Government has awarded two contracts for the Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue (SAR) lifeboats, which are the first small vessels to be built under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS).

One contract worth $43.4 million, was awarded to Hike Metal Products in Wheatley, Ont., which would likely help in supporting an estimated 20 jobs and create additional 25 jobs over the course of the year.

Another contract, worth $45.8 million, was awarded to Chantier Naval Forillon in Gaspe, Que. This contract would create some 15 to 20 new jobs at its peak.

Each shipyard will be constructing six vessels, with options of up to an additional four.

Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for spring 2017.

The lifeboats will offer major SAR services, such as carrying out searches on water, responding to marine distress calls and providing assistance to disabled vessels.
