The Czech Probation and Mediation Service has announced a tender for 250 electronic monitoring bracelets and other 500 would be procured in the following two years, said Justice Ministry spokeswoman Tereza Schejbalova, without disclosing the financial details involved.
However, the final price of the project would likely amount to 800 million Kc, while 250 million would be the minimal price. The ministry expects the first ankle bracelets be be put into operation at the beginning of next year.
The contract covers supplies of electronic monitoring devices along with a monitoring center, and also training of the staff to operate the center and technical service. The center should be capable to communicate with up to 10,000 bracelets.
During the initial phase, the ankle monitors should be used for checking people sentenced to house arrest, and later, they might be also applied instead of custody. Presently, deputies are assessing such a proposal.
Through the electronic monitoring, the Prison Service will be able to solve the problems with overcrowded prisons in a long term.
